“In this study, Gülbin Özdamar Akarçay focuses on the simultaneous development of both photography, one of the most effective tools in the change of seeing and ways of seeing, and social science. Moreover, she also focuses on how photography can be used as a visual data in research and defines the field of visual sociology.”
Gülbin Özdamar Akarçay studied at The Academy of Performing Arts, Film and TV School (FAMU), Department of Still Photography in Prague in 2006. The exhibition Intimate Revolt, which she curated, received support from the Ministries of Culture of FAMU, Lithuania and the Czech Republic. The exhibition of self-portraits of 10 women photographers from 10 countries has been exhibited in the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Slovenia, and Turkey. Akarçay has opened solo exhibitions such as "My self-reflexive Diary: The Balkans (2017)", "Faces of the Prisoner (2002)", "Maticni's Children (2008)", "Narodni Divadlo (2008)". She was selected for the seminars organized by World Press Photo in Turkey between 2002-2004. In 2011, she founded the Living Women Photography Group, which has been producing photography and video projects against violence against women and children for 12 years. She has written articles in various magazines and compilation books. She carries out academic studies in the fields of visual sociology and ethnography, photography, identity, and gender. Between 2016-2017, with the support of TUBITAK, she conducted research at the Ethnography Centre of the University of Toronto, focusing on families from various ethnic and religious habitus, who migrated from Turkey to Toronto and had cross-married. She continues her research, photography projects and curatorial activities on city culture, gender, and identity issues.
